Otaru is a historic port town on Hokkaido's west coast, serving as one of two cruise options for the Sapporo area. Ships dock at the Otaru Cruise Terminal steps from the Otaru Canal — a photogenic stretch of gas-lamp-lit warehouses now hosting glass and music-box workshops. The Sakaimachi street of historic bank buildings fills an in-town day. Sapporo's Odori Park and Ramen Alley are about 45 minutes by train.

Tokyo is Japan's capital and a growing Asia-Pacific cruise homeport, with ships docking at Yokohama's Osanbashi Pier (45 minutes south) or the Tokyo International Cruise Terminal at Daiba. From Daiba, the Yurikamome rail line reaches central Tokyo in 25 minutes. The Imperial Palace gardens, Senso-ji temple in Asakusa, Shibuya crossing, and the Tsukiji outer market are the classic stops. Mount Fuji excursions are weather-dependent.
