Sitka Cruise Port Guide: Old Sitka Dock, Tendering, and the 7,000 Cap

Sitka's large cruise ships dock at the privately operated Old Sitka Dock, about five miles north of downtown, and shuttle passengers into town; smaller ships anchor in Sitka Sound and tender to the downtown waterfront — the way Holland America's MS Volendam did on April 26, 2026. Cruise volume is held to a voluntary cap of about 7,000 passengers per day, a community-industry agreement in the same spirit as Juneau's 2026 caps, scaled to a much smaller town.

Where your ship docks — and why it matters

Sitka's cruise geography splits into two very different arrival experiences:

• Old Sitka Dock. The deep-water pier north of town takes the large ships. It is a privately operated terminal — not a downtown city dock — and the trade-off is distance: you land about five miles from Sitka's walkable core and ride a shuttle in. The upside is certainty; docked passengers aren't hostage to tender-boat cycles.
• Downtown tendering. Ships that anchor in Sitka Sound run tenders to the waterfront by Harrigan Centennial Hall, landing you directly in the historic core — Castle Hill, St. Michael's Cathedral, and the shops are minutes away on foot. The cost is time: tender queues move slowly at the start and end of a call.

Neither is announced especially loudly at booking. If your day in Sitka is built around a timed excursion, it's worth checking which arrival your ship uses — the shuttle ride from Old Sitka Dock eats 15–20 minutes each way of your port time.

The 7,000-passenger cap

Sitka manages cruise volume with a voluntary daily limit of roughly 7,000 passengers ashore — an agreement between the community and the cruise lines rather than a law. It's part of a broader Alaska pattern: Juneau's negotiated 16,000/12,000 daily caps took effect in 2026, and Glacier Bay has run a hard two-ships-per-day permit system for decades. Sitka's version is the mid-sized template — big enough numbers to matter for scheduling, small enough that peak days still feel like a town rather than a terminal.

For passengers, the practical effect is the same as in Juneau: fixed-capacity excursions (raptor center tours, wildlife boats) sell out fastest on multi-ship days, so book before you sail.

Russian America's capital

Sitka is the most history-dense port on an Alaska itinerary. The Tlingit have lived on this coast for millennia; the Russian-American Company made Sitka (then New Archangel) the capital of Russian America in the early 1800s after the 1804 Battle of Sitka, fought at the river mouth that is now Sitka National Historical Park. When the United States bought Alaska in 1867, the formal transfer ceremony happened on Castle Hill, a five-minute walk from the downtown tender landing.

What survives makes an easy self-guided day:

• St. Michael's Cathedral — the Russian Orthodox cathedral at the center of the downtown street grid
• Castle Hill — the Alaska Purchase transfer site, with a short climb and a harbor view
• Sitka National Historical Park — a totem-lined coastal trail at the 1804 battle site, with the Southeast Alaska Indian Cultural Center
• The Russian Bishop's House — one of the few surviving Russian colonial buildings in North America

What else to do on a Sitka day

Beyond the history core: the Alaska Raptor Center rehabilitates eagles and other birds of prey a short ride from downtown; Fortress of the Bear houses rescued brown bears; and Sitka Sound's wildlife-boat operators run sea otter and whale tours out of the harbor. On a clear day, Mount Edgecumbe's volcanic cone across the sound is the backdrop to all of it.

How Sitka fits a 2026 itinerary

Sitka shows up on both major Alaska route shapes — Inside Passage round-trips and Gulf of Alaska one-ways. It was also on the season's very first wave of calls: Volendam tendered here on April 26, 2026, two days after her off-script Kodiak call, and Coral Princess called on May 3 during her world-voyage finale. Through the summer, Sitka days alternate between docked large-ship calls at Old Sitka Dock and tendered calls in the sound.
